After getting to grips with the ADR process on Saturday with Ollie we were able to reproduce this to an even larger scale on the Monday. It appeared that we had a large task ahead of us with ADR being required for 3 actors in one day but in reality like most things in this project it went very smoothly!
We set up exactly the same as before but this time we consistently change roles so that we could get experience at each aspect. I thoroughly enjoyed working on the desk and using the talkback feature to speak to the actors in the vocal booth this time but I also employed the same tactics as last time with Ollie. We noticed a trend with all of the actors in that they started off very slowly but once they had got the first few takes down they took to it like a duck to water. I guess that this is because it is a process that they are not used to so again it was important to make sure they were comfortable throughout.
I also noticed that different actors had different methods, some preferred to have a long run in so they had cues as to when there line was coming in and others preferred a shorter loop that had a beat-like rhythm to it which aided timing. It was important to note each performers preferences so that the process was as simple as possible for us and the actors.
We had 2 hours with each of the actors and we didn’t require Sacha (Angela) to come in as her lines of dialogue were all inside and we got good quality recordings of her.
After listening back to the audio of the kitchen scene we decided that also needed ADR due to the reflective surfaces so we also booked a session for John, Alex Faulkner’s Dad.
It was a great experience and I couldn’t have asked for it to have gone better. We saved all of the recordings and put them onto a hard drive where we could take the files, consolidate them and put them into Ableton. It isn’t my chosen form of D.A.W. to use but Luke and Ben are incredibly familiar with it so i’m more than happy to go with the majority.
The best compliment we got was later that evening when I saw that Megan had tagged Novum Films stating this on twitter:
It was wonderful to see our hard work was being appreciated, and we had impressed the actors!
