West Common and 3 Temple Gardens Shoot!

Unfortunately I had a dissertation tutorial with Bryan Rudd in the morning so I missed the start of the filming at West Common but I managed to make the latter half. As it turns out, I did not miss much…

As soon as I arrived Luke and Ben informed me that the audio was nigh on impossible to use for the standard we wanted to achieve so ADR would have to be used for this scene. We made sure the actors were OK with this and they agreed which was reassuring. It’s amazing how much wind there was and even a large umbrella trying to block out its path to the mic couldn’t stop it! However we continued to record audio so we had a guide track that could be used when it came to ADR.

After a days break we went to the next shooting location which was 3 Temple Gardens, just past the Cathedral. This was an extremely demanding shoot for everyone as it was outside and it was particularly cold! Luke and I were recording and after the lack of quality audio at West Common we had thought ahead and brought 2 lapel radio mics with us. This meant that if there was any interfering noise in the boom we could use the signals from those. The actors arrived and we started recording, with Luke being in charge of the Boom Pole and I was monitoring throughout. This proved to be a difficult task as we had four different audio signals coming in to various devices! I kept track of the levels on the camera where a radio mic and the onboard mic were being used and monitored the boom and the second radio mic on the ZOOM recorder. I did this using a pair of headphones that I kept exchanging into both devices. Despite the cold, the session was extremely successful and we shot a lot of scenes. I think this was due to the fact that we learnt from the previous days shooting and adapted to the conditions by giving ourselves the most audio audio signals possible, thus providing an increased chance of high quality audio. However there was a main road near to where we shooting so this did interfere slightly with the signals, especially the radio microphones. Hopefully we won’t need to ADR again!

We’re recording there again later tonight, but this time it’s inside. We’re extremely glad.
