Night Time Rehearsals

Yesterday, we arranged to meet up with the whole media group to have an evening practicing shooting for our film. As with the previous practice session, we hired out the same equipment (Rode NTG2 boom mic and Zoom recorder etc…) as we knew we would definitely be using during the actual recording. We also filled out MAP forms as we were filming off campus. This was helpful as it’s been a while since I had filled one out so it was a great refresher for when we actually started recording.

We met up at West Common at night so we would have experience shooting in different conditions. It’s also helpful as we aim to shoot at West Common for a particular scene and other scenes are designated night time shots.

Again we exchanged roles and helped out with the setting up of other equipment including the Canon C100, which Alex Faulkner admittedly was still getting used to! This worked out really well and we managed to record some audio that we were extremely pleased with, especially considering how close we were to the main (Carholme) road. We plugged direct in the camera and the Zoom to experience the different sources again and to understand the intricacies of both devices. I learnt how important it was to monitor and maintain the correct levels throughout the recording process so the takes are consistent and do not clip. I realised this as we were recording the Director of the project Tom Faulkner, who was reading out some practice lines. I was monitoring via the output in the camera and was constantly checking the levels on the monitor to ensure the audio did not clip. I also practiced holding the Boom which was a fulfilling experience as one of my main learning objectives is to have a better knowledge of the practices of such tasks. I feel like I am on my way to understanding the complex nature of onset recording.
