Angela’s Living Room and Bedroom Recording

We returned to Temple Gardens, to record Angelas living room scene and we were back up to a full compliment of Audio students. It was great having all three of us again as the tasks were able to be split more evenly, as we still had the radio mics so each source could be monitored adequately. We took it in turns covering each role, taking notes on which takes were particularly good as well as monitoring and operating the boom. It was an extremely successful session and I’m confident the audio is of a good quality and I am getting better and better at on set recording the longer the project continues.

The next shoot was on the 23rd November and took place at 91 Carholme Road, we shot in ‘Angelas Bedroom’ first and again took it in turns with each role as we were keen to learn as much as possible from the process. This scene took a while to finish so it was helpful to have three of us. Again there were few issues and we set up as usual. I really feel like I am getting into the groove as an on location sound recorder now, I no longer feel I’m guessing at any stage and I can almost preempt certain aspects. For example knowing where the camera may move, whether to hold the boom below or above for specific shots and which shots will need a drastic change in levels. This is where it helps to have done my research. By knowing which scene was coming up I could predict a rough audio level based on the loudness of the scene. In doing this it would take even less time to set up and have test run throughs, which helps with the smoothness of recording.

We have also been taking wild tracks at each location and taking recordings of spot effects whenever there is a break in the filming so that we can fill out the scene when it comes to the mixing stage.

When it came to the bedroom scene we moved to 46 Carholme Road and when we got there it was decided that 3 audio students were just too many for the size of the room so as I had done the most recording over the past few days it was decided that I should be allowed a break. I would have actually liked to have stayed but it was clear we would be a hinderance so I left early, happy in the knowledge that the recording had gone well and Luke and Ben were comfortable in what they were doing.
